Self-confidence and self-esteem
Do you find yourself thinking that you could or should have done something better or that you should be better?
Are you always saying sorry?
Do you shy away from new things or challenging situations?
Self-confidence and self-esteem can be considered grey areas and the terms are used interchangeably. Self-esteem is more to do with your own sense of worth and value, whereas self-confidence can be more related to actual actions and your abilities. Either way, having low self-esteem or self-confidence can have a massive impact upon your everyday life and they can be very strongly linked.
Low self-esteem and confidence might begin in childhood for some people or it can occur suddenly for others. It will be different for everyone. If you’ve been experiencing low self-esteem or confidence for a long time then it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly when it started or what exactly caused it. Sometimes it can be a single negative comment and this message of not being good enough is taken through into adulthood. It’s the one that stays with you and becomes stronger. It’s the voice that whispers in your ear.
If you have low self-esteem or confidence you may find yourself avoiding difficult or challenging situations or activities, or hiding away from social situations. It can reach the point where you don’t try anything new and this is just your coping strategy to protect yourself. It’s better this way. You may find yourself thinking what’s the point of trying when you’ll just end up failing or that you’re not good enough. It’s best not to even try.
It doesn’t have to be this way though and luckily your levels of self-esteem and confidence are not set in stone. They can be changed in a positive way and increased. Imagine knowing that you’re enough just as you are and you have the abilities to cope with whatever life throws your way.
